Priyanka Ashok Chopra was born on July 18th, 1982 in Jamshedpur, Jharkand, India. Her father, Ashok, was a doctor in the army and her mother is also a doctor. She has a younger brother called Siddharth. Chopra spent much of her childhood re-locating homes due to her fathers career in the army living in Jamshedpur, Bareilly and Lucknow in India before moving to the United States. While living in the States she studied first at Newton North High School in Newton, Massachusetts and then after another move at Cedar Rapid's John F. Kennedy High School in Iowa. In 2000 the family returned to India and Chopra enrolled at the Jai Hind College in Churchgate, Mumbai. While studying she entered the 2000 Miss India beauty pageant after her parents had sent her photographs to the organisers without her knowledge. Chopra was crowned Miss India and subsequently won the Miss World 2000 title. After winning Miss World, She left college to pursue a career in acting. She made her debut in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan alongside Vijay before moving on to Bollywood. Career Highlights In 2003, her first Bollywood film, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy was released. The spy thriller directed by Anil Sharmasaw saw Chopra star with Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta as Dr. Shaheen Zakaria. The movie was a big hit and was ranked as the third highest grossing film of the year. Later that year she appeared opposite action hero Akshay Kumar in Andaaz. Chopra received good reviews for her portrayal of the fun-loving Jiya and the role earned her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award (shared with co-star Lara Dutta) and a nomination for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. After a successful debut year Chopra was in demand during 2004 appearing in five movies. Her first appearance came in the action thriller Plan. Chopra had a supporting role as Rani, the girlfriend of a notorious Mumbai underworld gangster played by Sanjay Dutt. The film was a average performer at the box office as was her next effort, another gangster related thriller, Kismat. Chopra’s third film of the year was the thriller Asambhav starring opposite Arjun Rampal. Chopra played the role of Alisha, an aspiring pop singer, who travels to Switzerland to perform a concert when she becomes romantically involved with an Indian army commando who is on a mission to rescue the kidnapped Indian president. Her biggest success of the year came in the Bollywood remake of the1994 Hollywood thriller starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore. Her performance, the first villainous role of her career, won her widespread critical acclaim and a Filmfare Best Villain Award. She also received a second nomination for Filmfare the Best Supporting Actress Award. 2004 also saw her appear in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.
Chopra’s biggest hit of 2005 was the Vipul Amrutlal Shah directed drama Waqt: The Race Against Time. The movie is loosely based on Ikiru, the 1952 film written and directed by the acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar and was one of the top grosser’s of the year, thanks largely to a outstanding run in North America and the United Kingdom. Other highlights that year included the thriller Yakeen, playing the role of Simar who helps her husband as he recovers from an accident with amnesia and Karam starring as Shalini the wife of a retired hit man played by John Abraham. In 2006 Chopra appeared in the science fiction superhero film, Krrish, directed by Rakesh Roshan. The film starred Hrithik Roshan in the title role with Chopra playing his love interest Priya, a T.V. journalist, who is saved by Krrish from a parachute-glider accident. The film was met with widespread positive reviews being described as Bollywood epic and is considered to rival the likes of Superman, Batman and Spiderman in India. At the box office the movie was the biggest hit of the year and is ranked as the third on the list of highest grossing Bollywood films of all time earning an estimated 73 crores. Chopra also saw commercial success with Don - The Chase Begins Again, a remake of the blockbuster 1978 film Don. Her character Roma is a drugs gang member who is out to avenge the killing of her brother. The movie grossed 50 crores in India and is ranked in the top twenty highest grossing movies of all time. She also made various special appearances in Taxi Number 9211,36 China Town and Alag as well as staring in the romantic comedy Aap Ki Khatir opposite Akshaye Khanna. Nikhil Advani's ensemble piece, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love was Chopra’s first release of 2007. Featuring a huge star cast including Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Akshaye Khanna and John Abraham the movie was generally well received with comparisons being drawn to Richard Curtis' hit British movie Love Actually. Chopra’s only other appearance of the year was in Big Brother staring opposite Sunny Deol although she did make a brief special appearance in the song Deewangi Deewangi in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om. Chopra began 2008 with the release Love Story 2050, her second sci-fi role in as many years. She starred in a dual role of Sana a sweet and shy girl who lives life by the rules in the present day and an Ziesha an arrogant and bold girl in 2050. Despite developing a small cult following the movie was seen as a commercial failure. Her biggest hit of the year was in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion. Set in the dark side of the world of fashion Chopra plays an aspiring model, Meghna Mathur, and tells her story of struggle from small town girl to supermodel. The movie received extremely positive reviews and went on to become one of the years most successful films. Chopra’s performance won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the first time and Star Screen and IIFA Awards for Best Actress. Her final movie of the year was the romantic comedy Dostana. Chopra played the role of Neha Melwani the love interest of two men, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, who are pretending to be gay in order to rent out an apartment. The movie was filmed entirely in Miami, United States, a first for a Bollywood Film, and was successful at both the U.S. and Indian box offices. In 2009 she will be appearing in Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey, Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee? and Jugal Hansraj's Pyaar Impossible.
